Police warn of ‘ringing the changes’ scam in Exeter as two men try to confuse shop staff into handing over cash

Police are warning Exeter businesses to be aware of two men who have duped shop staff out of handing over cash in a ‘ringing the changes’ scam.

Officers said two men have been going into shops in the Exeter area, asking to change notes, muddling the transaction and leaving with more cash than they handed over.

Shop owners are being urged to warn staff of the scam and contact the police immediately on 999 if anyone is seen committing the crime.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “We have received a report of persons attempting the ‘ringing the changes’ scam.

“The report received is of two males entering shops in the Exeter area requesting to change notes for another denomination in a confusing manner, skimming notes and leaving with more money.

“Please be wary of this and inform staff.“

If you have any information to help police, call 101 quoting log 399, of July 15, 2020.
