Members spent a ‘disappointing’ two hours clearing up after ‘mindless youths’ trashed Honiton Bowling Club green with thrown clods of earth.
The club said three youths can be seen on CCTV tearing up turf and throwing handfuls of mud over the boundary fence and onto the green from the playing field next door.
Police want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area of Bowling Green Lane at the time of the vandalism, on Monday July 6, at around 9.24pm.
Tony Tooley, Honiton Bowling Club spokesman, said members learned of the damage from a photograph posted on social media.
He said it was initially thought the green itself had been damaged.
The vandalism comes at the same time members were allowed to return to the greens for friendly games after the coronavirus lockdown stopped all play.
Mr Tooley said: “When we went to look, we found that it was clods of earth that had been thrown over the fence from the neighbouring park.
“There were a few members at the club that morning so we all set to and cleared it up which took about two hours or so to clear up with brushes.
“Our green keeper was concerned about any potentially expensive damage to the mower when the green was next cut should any small stones be left.
“We had to be very thorough in the clear up, and then roll it the following morning.
“It is extremely disappointing that we have this excellent facility for the people of Honiton to enjoy and for some mindless youths to do this.”
Honiton neighbourhood police team are appealing for witnesses and are keen to learn if anyone saw or heard anything suspicious in the Bowling Green Lane and Streamers Meadows area at the time the turf was thrown.
Mr Tooley said: “On looking at our recorded CCTV images we found that it happened at 9:24 pm on Monday night [July 6].
“There were three youths seen pulling up handfuls of turf from the neighbouring playing field and throwing them over the boundary fence. This went on and off for fifteen to twenty minutes.
“There were other people in the park that could have seen what they were doing.”
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 9.35pm on 6 July following reports of turf being thrown onto Honiton Bowling Green from a nearby public field.
“Reportedly a group of young people were involved.
“No damage has been caused to the green itself.
“Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious, or has information about the incident, is asked to contact police.”
