Honiton supermarket installs new charge points where electric car drivers can top up for free

Electric car owners in Honiton can now charge their vehicles for free at the town’s Tesco superstore.

Volkswagen and Tesco have partnered to provide the largest retail electric vehicle charging network in the UK, giving motorists a place to top up their cars while doing their shopping.

The Tesco superstore, in Battishorne Way, Honiton, has now been fitted with complimentary charging points where motorists can charge any electric car to the 7kW points, free of charge.

Before motorists use the points, they have to download the Pod Point app then plug in the charger and confirm their charge.

Paul Beazley, spokesman for Volkswagen, said: “Everyone loves a freebie and owners of any electric vehicle can plug their car in and give it a charge.

“We’re delighted to be playing a role in boosting charging infrastructure.”

Jason Tarry, Tesco CEO, said the supermarket was on its way to achieving its ambition of installing more than 2,400 EV charging bays across 600 of its stores.

It is estimated the average electric car owner will be able to get around 22.5 miles of free charge, plugging in while doing their weekly shop.
