Man in critical condition in hospital after ‘setting himself on fire’ in lighter fluid accident in Exmouth flat, say police

A man remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after ‘setting himself on fire’ in an accident with lighter fluid in Exmouth, say police.

Emergency services were called to a blaze in a flat in Hartley Road on Friday morning (June 26) following reports of an explosion.

A casualty aged in his 40s suffered serious burns.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation, said Devon and Cornwall Police today (Monday, June 29).

A force spokesperson added: “The fire is believed to be a result of the man setting himself on fire after an accident with lighter fluid.

“He is in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

“He has therefore yet to be spoken to by investigating officers, and this matter will remain under investigation at this time.”

Hartley Road was shut for more than an hour on Friday and nearby residents were evacuated.

Firefighters from Exmouth and Middlemoor in Exeter tackled the blaze.

The flat was said to be ‘fully involved’ in fire.

The air ambulance landed in Exmouth as part of the incident.
