Police swoop on Axminster after reports of ‘suspected armed person’

Armed police searched residential areas in Axminster on Tuesday evening after a person was suspected of having a gun.

Roads were closed by police, areas were cordoned off, and pedestrians turned away as balaclava-wearing armed officers patrolled the scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police said a person has been detained and is in custody waiting to be questioned.

Police have not confirmed the exact location of the incident.

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers were notified at around 7.30pm last night, Tuesday 23 June, following reports of a suspected armed person in a village in Axminster.

“Armed officers attended the scene assisted by the police helicopter.

“A person was detained by police and is currently in police custody awaiting questioning.”

Axminster residents reported seeing and hearing the police helicopter flying low over the areas of Cherry Tree Road, Cunningham Avenue, Milbrook Meadows, Millwey Avenue, Flax Meadow Lane and Foxhill. It was also seen over Musbury and Kilmington.

Throughout the evening residents reported seeing officers armed with guns in the areas of Cuningham Avenue, Cawley Avenue and Millwey Avenue.

Armed police were reported to have blocked off areas of Musbury, closing roads to vehicles and pedestrians.

A police drone was spotted flying over areas where armed officers patrolled, said onlookers.
