Jogger fends off ‘wooden knife’-wielding robber at Exeter valley park

A jogger fended off a would-be robber wielding a ‘wooden knife’ who demanded his phone and wallet at an Exeter beauty spot.

Police are appealing for information over the incident which happened at an area known as Bramham’s Playing Field – or River Valley Park – at around 7.05am on Friday, June 12.

Officers are hunting a ‘straggly-haired’ suspect who brandished a 12-inch ‘martial arts weapon’ before fleeing when his intended victim fought back.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “The male victim was running with his dog along a footpath next to a wooded area behind Water Lane when a man stepped out and demanded his phone and wallet.

“When the jogger, aged in his 40s, refused, the suspect produced a wooden weapon described as a martial training knife.

“A struggle ensued before the suspect fled the scene.

“He is described as a white male, aged between 30 and 40, around 5ft 10in in height, and of medium build with long ‘straggly’ dark-coloured hair.

“He had a stubble beard and was wearing a brown Belstaff-type coat with a belt and two large pockets on the chest and two on the waist.

“The suspect was also wearing a black leather jacket with fur-trimmed collar underneath, brown gloves, blue jeans and white trainers.

“It is believed he suffered an injury to this right arm during the struggle.”

Anyone with information on the robbery is urged to contact police by calling 101, or emailing, quoting crime reference number CR/046764/20.
