Sidmouth beach safety warning with strong winds to create dangerous conditions for swimmers

A safety warning has been issued to beachgoers in Sidmouth – with strong easterly winds to create dangerous conditions tomorrow and on Friday.

Swimmers have been urged to stay away from the town’s rock islands and take extra care by the lifesaving charity which would have to come to their rescue.

A Sidmouth Lifeboat spokesperson said: “We are expecting strong easterly winds in Sidmouth tomorrow (Thursday, May 28) and Friday, May 29.

“These conditions will make it dangerous to be in the water around the rock islands.

“We are asking all visitors to Sidmouth beach to avoid swimming near the rock islands in these conditions, and to take extra care when visiting the coast during these extraordinary times, to avoid putting extra strain on the already very busy emergency services.”

While the lifeboat’s HQ on The Esplanade is currently shut due to the coronavirus pandemic, its volunteer crew is still on call 24/seven.
