Sinking kayak scare off Jacob’s Ladder sparks call to Sidmouth Lifeboat

Reports a kayak was sinking and a person was in the sea 100 metres off Jacob’s Ladder sparked a call to Sidmouth Lifeboat this evening.

The lifesaving charity has issued a safety message to bank holiday water users after its volunteer crew was tasked to the incident at around 7.25pm.

It was about to launch from the beach when the kayaker emerged on the shore safe and well.

As the lifeboat rig was on the beach about to launch, the kayaker made the shore – wet, but safe and well…

A Sidmouth Lifeboat spokesperson said: “Tasked to a kayaker in difficulty 100m off of Jacob’s Ladder, Sidmouth.

“The kayak was sinking and the kayaker was in the water.

“As the lifeboat rig was on the beach about to launch, the kayaker made the shore – wet, but safe and well.

“Please remember, whether you are local or not, a novice or experienced – the sea can still catch you out.

“If you are going out on the water this bank holiday weekend – or any time – please make sure you check the weather forecast and tides, and have the right safety equipment with you, including lifejackets.”
