Garage destroyed by blaze in Axminster as firefighters battle to stop flames spreading

Firefighters tackled blaze that destroyed a garage in Axminster in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, May 12).

Crews from the town and Charmouth were called to Poplar Mount at around 4.10am after several members of the public dialled 999.

They arrived to find the property ‘well alight’, donned breathing apparatus and used thermal imaging kit to battle the flames.

Firefighters managed to stop the blaze from spreading to other garages.

There was 80 per cent fire damage to the contents, 100 per cent smoke damage and 30 per cent smoke damage to the adjacent garage…

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “One fire crew from Axminster and a fire crew from Charmouth attended numerous calls reporting a garage on fire.

“On arrival, the garage was well alight and crews quickly got to work using two breathing apparatus sets, two hose-reel jets, a safety jet and a thermal imaging camera.

“The fire was contained to one garage at this time and the adjacent garage was emptied as it contained motorbikes.

“Breathing apparatus was increased to four and two safety jets. Water was supplied from a hydrant.

“Police were also requested at scene. There was 80 per cent fire damage to the contents, 100 per cent smoke damage and 30 per cent smoke damage to the adjacent garage.”
