Potatoes replaced costumes by Budleigh Salterton youngsters celebrating this year’s World Book Day, on Thursday, March 5.
Pupils at St Peter’s Primary School this year decorated potatoes as their favourite book characters instead of dressing up.
The school’s move away from children arriving for the day dressed up as their favourite story characters aimed to reduce waste and expense.
Headteacher Steve Hitchcock said: “The main reason was to try and not be too wasteful buying costumes that don’t get used more than once. Everyone can spare one potato.
“It was a really fun idea.”
