‘Everybody has been so nice’ – Ottery welcomes buyer of Silver Street newsagent

Kindness and a warm welcome have been heaped on a couple from Buckinghamshire who have bought an Ottery St Mary newsagent.

Sajjad Karim, aged 56, and his wife Sabah, 49, recently took over Pearson’s News, in Silver Street, buying the business from Ian and Karen Pearson.

The couple, who in the past ran a newsagent in London, chose Ottery over Cornwall after being charmed by the town.

Owner Sajjad said: “People have been so nice I can’t tell you. Everybody has been so kind – every single person.

“In London everybody is on their phone. They have more to say here to you and everybody knows everybody.

“People have been coming in and saying ‘hello Mr Karim’. We haven’t become familiar with everybody just yet because it’s just the two of us, but they have learnt our names.”

The couple had been looking for a new business in the next county when they learned the Ottery business was for sale.

Sajjad said: “We were down in Cornwall having a look. We saw this on the way back and thought we would have a look.

“We liked the place and we liked the town.”

Karen and Ian Pearson, who sold the newsagents to Mr and Mrs Karim, plan to spend some time relaxing in the sun.

Mrs Pearson took to social media to confirm the sale of the shop and thank Ottery’s community for its support over the last 24 years, with the newsagent and a greengrocer business in Mill Street before that.

Karen, who helped Mr and Mrs Karim with their first week running the newsagent, wrote: “Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your custom and support at both our shops in Ottery during the past twenty-four years. We will miss you all.”
