Age Concern reveals why charity suddenly shut its Sidmouth centre – just nine months after its launch

Age Concern has revealed why the charity shut its Sidmouth centre – just nine months after the hub offering elderly people support, companionship and advice was launched.

The cause blamed the ‘challenging economic climate’ and ‘slow uptake’ of its Home Support Service for the closure.

It ‘regretfully’ made the decision over the High Street premises just before Christmas.

The centre had only opened in April last year.

Age Concern Exmouth and District said in a statement: “Unfortunately, due to the challenging economic climate and slow uptake of our Home Support Service, the centre was unable to cover the costs of having a physical presence in the town.

“Although we widely publicise the fact, many people are still unaware that Age Concern Exmouth and District is not funded by government or grants.

“Its entire income is derived from donations from the public and income raised from the Home Support Service.

“We know that many local residents found the centre and its staff invaluable for signposting, information, advice and advocacy and for services such as the McClure’s free will writing service.

“We intend to continue providing our services from our centre in Exmouth and all residents of Sidmouth are, of course, very welcome to visit us there for help and advice.

“McClure’s will writing service is also available in the Exmouth centre and also provides home visits on request.”

A notice placed in the window of the Age Concern Sidmouth centre says: “We regret to announce the immediate closure of this office.”
