‘It’s not too late to pick up the phone’ – join Sidmouth’s community lunch if you face spending Christmas Day alone

It is not too late to book your place for Sidmouth’s community lunch if you face spending Christmas Day alone.

Sidmouth has hosted a festive meal for all ages on December 25 for the last eight years for those who have no one at home, or without families or loved-ones.

There are already 55 people expected at St Teresa’s Hall, in Connaught Road, but organiser Carla Scott, coordinating the lunch for the second year, said no one would be turned away.

Minibuses will pick up and drop home residents living in the Sidmouth, Sidford and Sidbury areas, but the lunch welcome extends to those facing the day alone in other parts of East Devon if they can make their own way to the venue.

Carla, who has lived in Sidmouth for four years, said it is not too late to pick up the phone and reserve a place at the community lunch.

She said: “No one will be turned away. I would rather people weren’t going to be on their own on Christmas Day and hope they have the courage to pick up the phone and say ‘please can I come?’.

“There will be lots of people there. It will be a nice joyous occasion.

“It’s aimed at people who are going to be without family on Christmas day – all ages. We have some couples and it can be single people.

“The community has been very generous. We have had lots of offers to help on the day. People have been happy to give up their time.”

The team of 20 volunteers is spending Christmas Eve preparing the vegetables for the festive feast.

A generous helping of kindness and compassion is on the menu at a Sidmouth cafe serving free hot drinks and cake on Christmas Day.

The Dairy Shop owner, John Hammond, and his family, are to spend Christmas afternoon in the Church Street café and delicatessen serving free tea, coffee and cake to anyone coming through the door.

The Dairy Shop, in Church Street, is open from from 12.30pm until 2.30pm, on December 25. All are welcome.
