New boat aims to help Exmouth Christmas Day dip go swimmingly

A new safety boat will be in use and patrolling the water at this year’s Christmas Day swim in Exmouth.

Exeter City Council’s harbourmaster Grahame Forshaw said his team will launch the boat for the swim, helping to oversee the safety of those taking a festive dip.

He said: “We’re happy to be helping out with the event and ensuring that it all goes swimmingly.

“We’ll have our harbour patrol boat out on the water ready to step in if anyone gets into difficulty.”

The council said Grahame and his small team were appointed to the new Harbour Authority this summer to oversee the smooth running of the Exe Estuary and Exeter Canal, maintain navigational markers from Exmouth to the city and ensuring the estuary is safe and commercially viable.

An Exeter City Council spokesperson said: “Our harbour patrollers will be adding their presence to the popular event, helping to oversee the safety of those making the festive dip.”

  • Exmouth’s Christmas Day swim starts at 11am sharp, on the beach below the clock tower.
