Fatal collision in Exmouth church car park involved ‘life-long friends’ leaving Christmas event, says ‘devastated’ community

Two elderly women involved in a fatal collision in the car park of an Exmouth church were ‘life-long friends’ leaving a Christmas event.

The ‘saddened and devastated’ community at All Saints Church, in Exeter Road, said the tragedy occurred as members of an over-60s group went home on Tuesday.

An 84-year-old local woman died after she became trapped beneath a vehicle at around 4.45pm.

Police, paramedics and the fire service were called to the scene.

The driver of the blue Ford Fiesta car, also an 84-year-old woman, was uninjured.

Father Owen Murphy, of All Saints Church, said in a statement that the two women involved in the tragedy were ‘life-long friends’ who had attended an over-60s group Christmas event.

He added: “The church community at All Saints’ Church, Exmouth, is saddened and devastated by the tragic collision on 10 December, involving two life-long friends, following a local over-60s group Christmas event which had been held in the church hall.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those involved.

“I would like to commend the members of the emergency services who dealt with the collision and the church members at the scene who were quick to offer care and support in what was a distressing situation for everyone there.

“Our church is open from 10am to 5pm on Thursday for people to come for prayer and to light a candle.

“We would like to offer our support to anyone who needs it.”
