A woman died in Exmouth this evening after she was struck by a vehicle in Exeter Road and became trapped under a car.
The emergency services said the pedestrian was struck near All Saints Church and was declared dead at the scene.
The road has been closed while police and forensic officers carry out investigations, said Devon and Cornwall Police.
Fire crews from Exmouth and Middlemoor were called to release the woman from beneath a vehicle and she was declared dead by paramedics.
A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The control room received a call from the ambulance service to assist with a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.
“Two crews from Exmouth and one crew from Middlemoor were mobilised.
“Unfortunately, the female was trapped under the vehicle and was declared deceased on scene by paramedics after being released from the car.”
Police said the road could be closed for several hours while forensic examination of the scene takes place.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “This is a fatal incident and we need to make sure we do a thorough investigation to identify the cause of the incident.”
Police said no arrests have been made.
