Residents evacuated after fire breaks out in Exeter cafe

Fire crews have been dealing with a kitchen fire in an Exeter cafe this morning.

The premises, in Sidwell Street, is located below flats and residents were evacuated by firefighters.

Two fire engines and an aerial ladder platform from Danes Castle, as well as a fire engine from Middlemoor, were all sent to the scene following calls to the emergency services at 6.07am.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “On arrival, crews confirmed there was a fire within a kitchen of a café, with flats above.

“Crews evacuated people from the flats and extinguished the fire using four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and a fan to ventilate the property.

“The fire was contained to a commercial oven. There was 20 per cent smoke damage to the kitchen and office area. All residents were evacuated safely.”
