Workhouse; the word alone was calculated to send a shudder down the spine of any honest 19th century worker.

It signified the end of the line, the final indignity –  “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here”.

This presentation recounts the life endured by workhouse inmates until the system was finally ended in the 1930sIt will also identify the workhouse that served Budleigh Salterton and the surrounding area.

Organised by the Friends of Fairlynch Museum in Budleigh, light refreshments will be available.

Attendees are asked to pay £5, or £3 for those who are Friends of Fairlynch.

Budleigh’s Late Night Shopping event is on Friday, December 6, and Fairlynch Museum will be open from 6pm to 8pm.

There will be mulled wine and mince pies and the museum is offering 10 per cent discount on all purchases from the shop.
