Axminster shop owner seeks permission to change use to cafe

The owner of a business in South Street, Axminster, is seeking to change the use of a shop to a café.

Plans have prompted a letter of support from the property owner next door.

West Country Higgler And Crafts will not be altered to accommodate the change, but planning documents state, if successful, the move will allow the business to develop.

The owner wishes to establish a specialised tea and coffee emporium with associated homewares. No hot food will be prepared on the premises, but cold and pre-prepared food will remain available.

Located in its existing premises for three years, the shop currently sells its own brand coffee and Devon tea, as well as crafts and sandwiches to take away.

Supporting the café application, Christopher Love told the district council in a letter the business is ‘run most professionally’ and that, in his opinion, the change of use will ‘greatly benefit the public at large’.

East Devon District Council, which will seek the views of parish and ward members, will determine the application.
