General election 2019: Conservative parliamentary candidate for East Devon is revealed

A Government adviser and former radio presenter has been announced as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for East Devon.

Simon Jupp, 34, who currently works for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will be vying for residents’ votes in the general election on December 12.

He said after his selection as a prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC) today: “My goodness we have got a lot of work to do, but I am so chuffed and so incredibly proud to be your be your candidate for East Devon and to win this constituency again and return a Conservative MP for East Devon, thank you ever so much for your support.

“I hope to be out campaigning this afternoon.”

At being chosen as the Tory candidate, he said: “I am over the moon.”

Mr Jupp described his selection as the ‘highlight of his life’, adding: “Hopefully December 13th or 12th, depending when the result comes in, will be the second highlight of my life.”

Mr Jupp currently works as a special adviser in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and has previously been a radio presenter in Devon.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab tweeted this afternoon: “Fantastic news. Congratulations @simonjamesjupp – a terrific candidate, who will be an excellent MP…following in the footsteps of the great @HugoSwire!”

East Devon’s parliamentary seat has been held by a Conservative incumbent for the last 150 years.

Sir Hugo Swire, who had been East Devon MP since 2001, stood down when parliament dissolved this week.

Sir Hugo tweeted this evening: “Delighted that @simonjamesjupp has been selected as the Conservative PPC for East Devon…a Devon man who has been at the heart of national politics already and is well-qualified to represent the interests of my former constituents, Good luck.”

Also standing in East Devon are Independent Claire Wright, who has contested the past two general elections, Daniel Wilson for Labour, and Liberal Democrat Eleanor Rylance.

UKIP and the Green Party have not revealed their parliamentary hopefuls to date.
