Work begins on Exmouth’s new seafront watersports centre, Sideshore

Work has begun on Exmouth seafront’s new Queen’s Drive watersports centre, Sideshore.

Grenadier Estates, site leaseholder, said it was ‘delighted that preparatory work is underway’.

Work has begun removing the existing road surface, excavating the site and laying the foundations in readiness for the next steps.

Building firm Devon Contractors said ‘work was progressing well’.

Grenadier Estates said the centre, which is due to open for business next summer, said local building firm Devon Contractors was ‘on track’ to deliver the new sustainable centre next year, in time for the warmer weather.

Simon Lawrence, Devon Contractors contract manager, said: The enabling works have seen the hoardings, security fencing and access gates erected.

“Works to remove the existing tarmac surface and excavate the site are underway.

“We have begun laying the foundations for the main building and expect the steel works to be in place in the coming weeks.”

Grenadier Estates said plans to reduce waste to landfill were in place and Devon Contractors ‘endeavour’ to recycle up to 85 per cent of site waste, in line with the ethos of the project.

Michelin-star chef Michael Caines last year confirmed he will open a restaurant and café as part of Sideshore.

Edge Watersports owners, Eric and Steph Bridge, from Exmouth, will run the Queen’s Drive watersports centre.

Grenadier Estates has agreed a target to complete construction by summer 2020.

Earlier this year East Devon District Council (EDDC) finished a new road and car park at Queen’s Drive.

Grenadier Estates was required to take on the lease for the site following completion of the road and car park, EDDC said.
