Of the 2,367 people who voted in a referendum to gauge support for the proposed Sid Valley Neighbourhood Plan, a whopping 90 per cent voted in favour.

The plan can now be adopted and used by East Devon District Council to help it determine planning applications in the parish.

Voters were asked: “Do you want East Devon District Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Sidmouth to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?”

A total of 2,140 voted ‘Yes’. Just 227 voted ‘No’.

The electorate in the area covered by the referendum is 12,228 and the turnout was 19.4 per cent. Five ballot papers were rejected.

The Sid Valley Neighbourhood Planning referendum took place yesterday (September 19).

Extensive consultations were carried out in the plan area. The exercise sought the views of residents, businesses and special interest groups, including young people.

It is already being used by Sidmouth Town Council when considering its recommendations on planning proposals.
