Funeral takes place of top murder detective and former head of CID John Essery

The funeral has taken place of one of Devon’s best-known former detectives – John Essery.

Mr Essery headed Devon and Cornwall’s CID and later became an assistant chief constable of the force. He led many of Devon’s most high-profile murder investigations.

They included the controversial conviction of Brian Parsons for the murder of 84 year old Ivy Batten who was murdered at her home in Shute near Axminster in 1987. She was beaten to death and the case led to three internal reviews and also was referred to the Court of Appeal.

John Essery also headed the Nicola Parsons murder in Plymouth in 1996 when the 18 year old was killed in a derelict nursery by 24 year old Andrew McKinlay.

Mr Essery died of cancer aged 75 and his funeral was held close to his home near Crediton earlier this week.
