Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival gets its own beer

A brewery is bottling a special Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival beer which will be on sale at this year’s event from September 18-22.

The limited-edition bottles of Black Tor Brewery’s amber ale feature artwork by Devon-based printmaker Cathy King, who also produced the cover artwork for the fest’s programme.

Budleigh Festival Beer will be on sale by the bottle or on-tap from the Festival Marquee on the Green.

The souvenir ale will also be available to buy from the Tipsy Merchant in High Street and Budleigh Fish and Chips in Chapel Street.

Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival offers over 50 events, including award-winning authors, creative workshops, and activities for children.

Events take place at venues across the town with the marquee on the Green acting as the festival’s ‘hub’.

This year’s highlights include Dame Hilary Mantel, James Runcie, Kirsty Wark, Dr David Nott, Joanne Harris, Peter Hanington, Christina Lamb, Jenny Eclair, Emma Smith, Louis De Bernières and many more.

Workshops include life writing and memoir, concertina books, brush lettering, stationery making and creative writing.

Jonathon Crump, director of Dartmoor-based Black Tor Brewery, said: “The Budleigh Festival Beer is our award-winning ‘Pride of Dartmoor’ amber ale in striking limited-edition bottles, produced especially for the event.

“It’s an easy-drinking amber ale, with biscuit and caramel notes and a sweet floral finish. We think it is the perfect accompaniment to a good read.

“I live in Budleigh Salterton myself, so am pleased to be supporting such a fantastic local event that brings the community together and attracts audiences and authors from all over the UK.

“We supported the event last year too and really enjoyed the positive, friendly vibe it brought to the town.”

Malcolm Elliott, festival chairman, said: “We’re excited to share Budleigh Festival Beer with our audiences and think it is a fantastic way to celebrate our special festival.”

Black Tor Brewery will be running the bar in the marquee on the Green over the festival’s five-days; with Salcombe Gin, Sandford Orchard Cider, Luscombes soft drinks, wines and snacks also available.
