A major sea search was launched late last night following reports the crew of a fishing vessel had spotted red flares between Sidmouth and Beer Head.
The coastguard helicopter was scrambled shortly before 11pm, along with lifeboats from Exmouth and Lyme Regis. Coastguard teams from Beer, Lyme Regis and West Bay also joined the search.
A fishing vessel reported seeing two red flares, the first in an area to the east of Lyme Bay and the second between Sidmouth and Beer Head.
Beer Coastguard reported: “While the lifeboats and helicopter searched from the sea and air, we positioned team members at vantage points along the coast between Salcombe Hill and Beer head.
“It was a very clear night, and a thorough search did not find anybody in difficulty and as no vessels were reported overdue.”
The search was stood down.
