Young people transform grounds at Honiton Community Hospital

The grounds of Honiton Community Hospital have been given a makeover – thanks to young people carrying out voluntary work as part of the National Citizen Service scheme.
Taking part in National Citizen Service offers young people the opportunity to embrace new experiences, succeed in new challenges, expand skills and give something back to the communities they live in.
Team Leader for the group, Monica Duque said how delighted they were to have been given the opportunity to volunteer at Honiton Hospital and how each young person had risen to the gardening challenge presented to them.
Julia Cutforth, the Health and Social Care Community Services Manager based at Honiton, expressed gratitude to the National Citizen Service and the young volunteers involved for their hard work. She applauded them for the significant improvements they have made to the hospital environment for both patients and staff.
Julia also gave thanks to the League of Friends for their support with this project, and to Combe Garden Centre for  the kind donation of plants and flowers.
League of Friends Chairman Heather Penwarden commented on what an enjoyable and satisfying experience this project had been for all concerned.
“It was really great to see these wonderful young people working together to enhance the grounds and add a bit of colour and cheer for all those attending the hospital,” she said.
“I could see how the group enjoyed working together and how proud they were of what had been achieved by the end of their volunteering experience.”
Heather added that, with more and more outpatient clinics coming to Honiton, it is becoming a very busy site for local people to receive their health care.
“We want people to not only feel welcomed on arrival but to have a sense of pride in our community hospital and all the care that is provided from here,” she told East Devon News.co.uk.
“The work carried out by this team of local young people has been a great contribution to helping us achieve this aim.”
