Extensive resurfacing and drainage improvements will lead to ‘short-term inconvenience’ on the A373 between Honiton and Cullompton next month, motorists are being warned.
The work, which will necessitate overnight road closures, will help alleviate flooding.
Resurfacing will be undertaken in three separate locations, which will be co-ordinated to help minimise disruption.
Devon County Council says drainage repairs will start at Sheldon Junction, Dulford, on Monday, September 2 and is expected to take three weeks, with temporary traffic lights in place for the duration of this work.
The road will be closed overnight, from 7pm to 7am, from Godford Cross to Shoelay, Awliscombe, on the evenings of September 12, 13 and 16 for resurfacing.
On the evenings of September 17, 18 and 19, the road will be closed overnight from 7pm to 7am between Hembury Fort Cross and Godford Cross for resurfacing at Hembury Fort.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “The drainage upgrade will help alleviate flooding which has been a long-standing issue on this section of the A373. Although there will be some short-term inconvenience with the overnight closures for resurfacing, the work has been co-ordinated to reduce disruption and I’m sure people will welcome these improvements.”
Councillor Iain Chubb, County Councillor for Whimple and Blackdown, said: “The A373 is an important route in our area, and it’s really the backbone to travel between Honiton and Mid Devon. This work has to be done and I would ask everyone to bear with us while it’s underway – every effort will be made to complete it as soon as possible.”
Councillor John Berry, County Councillor for Cullompton and Bradninch, said: “Most of the work is being done overnight to minimise disruption, but we apologise for any inconvenience caused. It’s essential that this drainage work and resurfacing is done to maintain safety on this route, and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to having a better stretch of road.”
This work is weather dependent, so dates may change. Advanced signs will be set up on the A373 to advise drivers of closure dates.
During the road closures the official diversion route (using the same standard of road) will be signed via the A373, B3181, Cumberland Way, A30, A373 and vice versa.
