Police closed a section of the A30 near Honiton late last night after a large number of hay bales fell onto the carriageway.
Highways England initially reported one lane closed between Stopgate Cross and Upottery.
Lanes in both directions were subsequently closed to allow for the safe recovery of the bales.
Police reported poor driving conditions and motoring organisations urged drivers to approach the location with care.
Contractors working on behalf of Highways England were already en-route to the scene when the warnings were issued.
Highways England reported the road was clear at around midnight.
