Unfilled Honiton council seats subject to proposed timetable

Co-options to fill four of five remaining vacancies on Honiton Town Council are likely to take place on September 9 – if the full council agrees to a proposed timetable.

Town clerk Mark Tredwin says in a report, due to be put before councillors next week, that expressions of interest could be sought from Tuesday, August 13.

If nobody has put themselves forward to stand in a by-election for a casual vacancy, a total of five co-options could take place on the same night.

Last month, councillors agreed a co-option policy to ensure the process is fair, transparent and identifies those with the necessary skills to serve the community as well as represent the town.

Anyone who is interested in being co-opted onto the authority will be provided with a copy of the policy and the necessary forms to put themselves forward.

The closing date for candidate nominations is likely to be noon on Friday, August 30.

The by-election, if contested, is scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 5.

Nominations must be received by 4pm on August 8.
