MP urges East Devon’s independent shops to enter competition

Independent shops are the lifeblood of East Devon’s town centres – and they are being urged to enter a competition to find the best.

East Devon MP Hugo Swire is encouraging independent retailers across the district to enter this year’s Best Small Shops Competition.

The Vice President of Honiton Show made the appeal after attending the annul event on Thursday.

He said: “Calling all small shops in East Devon – what makes your shop stand out? Nominate yourself for the Best Small Shops Competition.”

The national competition is free to enter and offers promotional benefits. Organised by Indie Retail, it recognises small shops that sell specialist products and services and display unique knowledge and passion for their community.

East Devon’s vibrant independent shops scene has long proved a draw for visitors. Shopping centres have resisted the ‘cloned’ town effect, determined to offer consumers something different.

The competition not only celebrates the commitment and creativity of entrepreneurial independent retailers on the UK’s High Streets but also the central role independent retailers play in building local communities.

Indie Retail says: “The retail landscape is changing and ever-evolving, giving independent retailers the opportunity to enter the marketspace in a unique way, offering customers specialist knowledge, products and customer service.

“The Best Small Shops competition gives us the chance to celebrate this unique industry and show consumers what makes these small shops just so special.”

Every business that takes part will be displayed on the Indie Retail directory, raising customer awareness throughout the UK

Shortlisted retailers will be invited to attend a reception in November where the winner will be awarded the title of Best Small Shop 2019.

The closing date for entries is Monday, September 9.
