Free prize draw: make a pledge to reduce food waste and you could win a blender

Devon County Council is blending a competition with a summer campaign to reduce food waste.

It is giving away 20 food blenders in a free prize draw. All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is to pledge to compost food waste or recycle it.

You have got until September to make the pledge at  www.recycledevon.org or the Recycle Devon stand at Honiton Agricultural Show.

Each blender comes with a selection of jugs to turn fruit, vegetables and leftovers into delicious soups, sauces, marinades, smoothies, and milkshakes.

Research shows that almost half of food thrown away is fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, dairy, rice and pasta.

Some of the common reasons for waste are people buying too much, not storing it correctly, not eating things in time and cooking too much – especially pasta and rice.

Councillor David Harvey, Chair of the Devon Authorities Strategic Waste Committee, said: “In the UK we throw away 6.7million tonnes of food a year – that’s a third of the food we buy.

“Many Devon residents have a compost bin or food waste collection but it’s far better to prevent food being wasted in the first place.

“You would might be surprised the difference small changes like planning your meals can have on the amount you throw away.

“Not only will you help to reduce food waste, it’s better for the environment and your pocket. An average family could save up to £60 per month.”

Winners will be contacted after the campaign ends.  For more information on reducing food waste, visit www.recycledevon.org
