Firefighters put out blaze after smoke was spotted near Budleigh Salterton garages

Fire crews put out a blaze on open ground near garages in Budleigh Salterton.

Firefighters from Budleigh and Exmouth on Saturday morning, July 20, responded to a report of smoke seen coming from nearby garages behind Clinton Terrace.

When the crews arrived shortly before 9.30am they found rubbish had been set alight.

A Budleigh Salterton fire station spokesperson said: “It was the second call out in 36 hours; a call was received saying a large amount of smoke was coming from near a garage which they believed was on fire.

“The on-call fire engine from Budleigh and the wholetime fire engine from Exmouth were immediately mobilised.

“When leaving the Budleigh station in just under four minutes of receiving the call, the crew could see the large volume of smoke and members of the public watching.

“On arrival it was confirmed to be a large fire in the lane behind and in close proximity to the garage; the fire was quickly extinguished using hose reels.”

Budleigh’s crew attended a call to an automatic fire alarm at a residential home in West Hill shortly after 4pm on Thursday, July 18.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the crew investigated but found no sign of fire.
