Rumours that travellers have moved onto Mountbatten Park, home of Honiton Town Football Club, are untrue, EastDevonNews.co.uk can reveal.
They have, in fact, parked up in a field next to the St Rita’s Centre, run by the Augustinian Recollects, off Ottery Moor Lane.
The religious centre offers a place of peace and tranquility to those of all faiths. It also hosts conferences and business meetings, and has accommodation and leisure facilities for those seeking a retreat.
The centre has a total of 34 hotel-standard bedrooms and a football pitch. It is not yet clear if the land occupied by the travellers is within the centre’s confines or an adjoining piece of land.
East Devon District Council took eviction action after the travellers first moved onto Allhallows Playing Field.
Eviction papers were served last night (Sunday). The travellers had been on the field all weekend, causing the postponement of Honiton Sprint Triathlon organised by Pure Endurance Triathletes.
Police were called before the group eventually moved on earlier today.
A new date for the triathlon is expected to be announced later this week.
Disappointed athletes took to social media after initially fearing the event had been cancelled. News that it was to be re-scheduled means months of training will not go to waste.
Travellers have rights – even when staying on unauthorised sites – and protocols must be followed by landowners seeking eviction.
