Diary date: Hot Pennies ceremony

Oyez! Oyez! Honiton’s ancient Hot Pennies ceremony will take place on Tuesday, July 23.

Town crier Dave Retter will lead the event at noon in High Street.

Dating back to the 13th century, the annual celebration emerged around the time the town was granted a royal charter.

Mr Retter will be accompanied by civic leaders as he starts the event at the Volunteer Inn.

He will raise the feted garland pole topped with a gloved hand and declare:  “No man may be arrested so long as this glove is up.”

From its inception, the ceremony aimed to encourage people into Honiton for the annual fair.

The first hot pennies are traditionally thrown from the balcony of the former Assembly Rooms above The Old Pannier Market.
